Essential Ski Touring Equipment for Men

How to choose the best ski-touring equipment? On the way up it's better if you have on layers that actively dissipate your sweat and excess heat. Before going downhill you should put on top layers that insulate, retain heat and provide increased protection.

Basic principle of layering when ski-touring

When actively moving on skis, it’s necessary to think more about how you dress than when hiking. On the way up, you’ll warm up, and so it’s better if you have on layers that actively dissipate your sweat and excess heat. Excessive overheating when doing active sports can deprive you of energy, which you’ll feel instantly during the exercise. However, as soon as you stop moving, you’ll feel the negative temperatures and any bad weather more intensively. Therefore, it is necessary at the top and before going downhill to put on top layers that insulate, retain heat and also provide increased protection against wind or snowfall.

You’ll use this same principle of dressing when cross-country skiing, where you put out continuous physical performance. In this case, you’ll need clothing that combines the removal of excess heat with protection against wind, frost and snow.

With the right choice and combination of individual items of clothing, you’ll achieve a functional outfit, that will cooperate with you during active movement and subsequent skiing downhill. In the NORTHFINDER collection, we emphasize high-quality technical materials, functional elements and the possibilities of combining them. We have transformed more than 25 years of tradition in the design and manufacture of functional clothing into the now second special ski-touring collection.

Active layer

Use our technical super-stretch sweaters for ski-touring as a bottom layer or a second layer of thermal underwear. They offer a cut that respects the anatomy of the human body and fits you like a second skin. Furthermore, they brilliantly dissipate excess heat, dry rapidly and you can combine them with other items from the ski-touring collection. You can choose a technical sweater from the MANILO “Light Series” made from a super-elastic Micro fleece with thermoregulatory properties. Or the light, high-stretch sweater BUKOVEC with a full-length Pin-lock YKK® zipper. Here we used the quick-drying material Dri-release® DUO, thanks to which you will stay dry in every situation.

Active and protective layer

For a while now, hybrid constructions for clothing have ruled the world of outdoor sports. They combine the best properties of selected functional materials on the basis of knowledge about the functioning of the human body during movement. This is why we use top materials, such as Polartec® Alpha®, PrimaLoft®, Pertex® Quantum or Pertex® Shield in the ski-touring collection.

Hybrid jackets cooperate with the body during increased physical activity and effectively remove excess heat from the parts of the body that produce the most. On the other hand, exposed body parts, such as the chest and shoulders, are protected by windproof and water-repellent materials. You can rely on a jacket or trousers made in this way during active sports under winter conditions.

Cross-country skier

DRIENOV - you can use the DRIENOV jacket during active skimo or cross-country skiing when temperatures are lower below freezing even in stronger winds. Polartec® Alpha® insulation in key places (such as the chest, shoulders, neck and hood) provide thermal comfort. The Pertex® Shield membrane protects the head and shoulders in strong winds, snow or unexpected raini. The hybrid construction, i.e. the use of more breathable and elastic materials along the sides and inside of the arms, ensures effective moisture wicking and unrestricted movement. You’ll also appreciate the built-in underarm ventilation during active sports.

SOLISKO - a jacket with a hybrid construction for active movement, utilizing only the best of materials – insulating Polartec® Alpha® in the front panel and on the shoulders and arms, the non-inflatable and light Pertex® Quantum on the chest, neck and forearms. We used a high-stretch technical fleece made by Polartec® on the inside of the shoulders and sides, which permits you 100% freedom and comfort when moving. The elastic fleece hood fits your head like a glove and you can use it under your helmet, too. You’ll also appreciate the thumb hole at the end of the sleeves, thanks to which you’ll never be bothered by sleeves rolling up even during fast cross-country skiing or hiking uphill on your skis. For storing those necessary little items, you can use the pockets, the cut and position of which take into account a fastened backpack waist belt.

VHAN - when you are warming up quickly but at the same time looking for protection from the wind, the VHAN hybrid vest is the right thing for you. The Polartec® Alpha® insulation, combined with Polartec® fleece on the side panels and a windproof upper material on the chest and back, make this vest indispensable companion for any skimo touring. It combines well with the super-stretch BUKOVEC or MANILO sweaters. And here, too, you’ll find ergonomic pockets, that you can open easily even when the backpack’s waist belt is fastened.

Insulation layer

BUDIN - Primaloft® Down Blend is the perfect insulation for all physically demanding activities. It combines the best of synthetic fibres and moisture-treated down. Compared to classic down, it absorbs less moisture and retains its loft and thermal insulation properties even when it gets wet and so you can sweat in it without fear. Because of its excellent parameters, we used this insulation in the ultralight BUDIN ski-touring jacket. And here, too, we use a hybrid construction based on the functioning of the human body during active movement. It has elastic panels made from the material Tactel® on on the sleeves, sides and back. They allow better heat dissipation and comfort when moving. You’ll use this jacket at the end of your hike, when you pour tea from a thermos with numb hands, but also when going downhill, when you need to keep warm. Of course, there is nothing to stop you from wearing it even when cross-country skiing, when it’s freezing or blowing more than is pleasant.

Trousers

We also used hybrid construction for trousers:

RYSY - technical hybrid trousers that you’ll use not only for ski touring. The best mobility, protection and ventilation with an ideal fastening to skimo boots. The front panel of a 2.5-layer membrane protects exposed parts of the feet and offers excellent flexibility and water resistance. In places where the gusting wind is felt less, such as the backs of the thighs and forelegs, we used a more breathable, extremely flexible and warming fleece. The wide elastic waistband and the ergonomically designed cut at the knees bend guarantee comfort and a unique range of motion. Of course, there is a zipper on the bottom of the trousers, thanks to which you can adapt them to be worn with ski boots, or hiking or cross-country skiing boots.

DERESE - other trousers for active winter sports with a hybrid construction. The windproof, water-repellent and flexible 2.5-layer membrane on the front panels and the exceptionally elastic and breathable Polartec® Power Stretch Pro™ offer a great combination that you can rely on even with higher activities. When warming on the way up, you’ll appreciate the ventilation with a zipper on the sides and ventilation below the knees. Here, too, you can unzip the lower parts of the trousers and adapt them to your ski boots.

The KOSIARE shorts - not only hybrids but upper insulated shorts are also trendy. But this isn’t just a fashion fad; you’ll really appreciate it when out in the field. The shorts don’t take up much space in the backpack and, if necessary, you can pull them on very quickly and easily, even while wearing your skis. We don’t even have to mention that they will immediately increase thermal comfort. Izolácia Polartec® Alpha® insulation and a windproof, water-repellent flexible 2.5-layer membrane make them a truly excellent companion in cold and windy conditions. Use them in combination with RESWOR elastics, or RYSY or DERESE hybrid trousers.

WARNING: Ski-touring is an outdoor sporting activity. Therefore, don’t underestimate the impact of weather, especially reports on the level of avalanche danger. Don’t overestimate your own abilities and avoid risky situations. Get hold of appropriate clothing and equipment and learn how to use them. Follow the regulations and recommendations at the ski resorts. If you haven’t had at least a basic avalanche course and don’t have the necessary avalanche equipment, give priority to safe locations. Don't forget about insurance.
